Adjusting to the new normal in HR HR in the care sector is never an easy role, but HR in the care sector in the time of Covid19 has kicked up some unique challenges! Throughout the pandemic, we've been conscious of the stresses and strains faced not only by those who rely on our services but on the challenges faced by our staff, too. It should go without saying that Dementia Matters wouldn't be what it is without our fantastic Care & Support Workers out on the frontline delivering the high quality, person centred care our service users have come to depend on, and so it's vital that they're taken care of, too. Staff are supported throughout In order to ensure our staff are supported, weekly welfare checks were put in place from the beginning of the lockdown period. Our Managers continue to be in regular contact with the teams, and are available at any time, to talk through any concerns or queries our members of staff may have. Both Hannah, Head of HR, and myself have been on hand to provide additional support and continue to be so if any member of the team wants to get in touch with us directly. This applies to both the staff who have been working throughout as well as those we had no choice but to put on furlough; I'm well aware it's been a hugely unsettling time for everyone, and no one on the staff team at Dementia Matters is an exception. Recruitment is never easy While recruitment was initially placed on hold due to the pandemic, I'm pleased that we're slowly getting up and running again. As a lot of services remain closed in our local area, we're seeing an increased need for support in people's own homes so are currently recruiting for staff who really want to make a difference to those living with dementia in their own communities. Things have had to change in light of covid 19, and interviews now take place over the phone instead of face to face – an adjustment for us as well as those applying to join the charity! I'm looking forward to the days of face to face interviews resuming but have had some great phone interviews with prospective new staff members over the last few months. Adjusting to the so called 'new normal' will no doubt bring more new challenges with it, but I'm looking optimistically towards the future, and hope to be able to help support our growing team through whatever comes next.
