During the 15 years I have been with Dementia Matters I have seen some real difficult and highly pressured situations within the Social Care sector and we have faced very tough challenges but never anything to this scale. Suddenly faced with the unprecedented crisis of Covid19, the direct impact this awful disease has had on the social care sector has been devastating and extremely tragic to all of those affected.

There have been days during this time where I have felt profoundly saddened, overwhelmed, lost and hopeless and I believe my team would also share in these thoughts.

We have worked endlessly during these uncertain times mostly in the dark due to lack of guidance and external supports however today feels like a better day and I know we still have a long way to go and a lot of uncertainty ahead of us yet, but it’s important during these times we remind ourselves of the good we have achieved to help us focus and continue to get the job done.

As Head of Services and Deputy Chief Executive Officer I am so proud of the DM team and what we have managed to achieve during this time despite the difficulties we have been faced with we have Completed over 950 Welfare checks to our service users, completed over 880 staff welfare checks, delivered Over 11600 Care Hours, offered our centres and staff to NHS and local authority for emergency use, provided support to over 1200 Families, provided over 6500 hours of management support and crisis specific pandemic planning, sourced, Provided and Used over 22500 items of PPE, maintained over 96% Quality compliance and staff training, protected 62 north east jobs during the crisis and Remained Covid-19 free both service user and staff.

I would like to say how truly grateful I am to all our Hero Keyworkers, the Care and Support Workers, as their endless dedication to our services users and their families is incredible. I would also like to say thank you to the services team and other members of the SMT for the early mornings, late nights, home schooling conference calls, continued adaption to a new way of working all in order to achieve the unachievable in this unbelievably troubling and tragic time.
