My dad, the gentlest, kindest man I know was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s some years ago. I have witnessed the heartbreaking impact it has had on everyone that loves him. My mother is inspirational, the way she has handled his care has been relentless and I am so proud of her.

Dementia Matters is a local charity that we have come across recently. It funds The Bradbury Centre that my dad has started attending one day a week. Not only does this give my mum some respite, it is a safe environment for my dad to go and socialise with others.

I have decided to cycle The Coast and Castles Route, around 200 miles from Newcastle to Edinburgh in order to fundraise for Dementia Matters. Cycling is something that always reminds me of my dad as he used to take me Youth Hosteling as a child with our bikes. I think I was 8 when he cycled me up Hartside Pass, a climb of 1940ft. In usual fashion I doubt I’ll do any training and aim to do it in 3 days.

Any sponsorship, no matter how small would be greatly appreciated.
